Finding the perfect pair of jeans is not easy, to say the least. Add to that the various styles, lengths and cuts available today, and you’ve got quite a task on your hands.

Here’s a quick guide for the most popular jeans fit styles you’ll find in stores – use it to find the fit that most suits your body type and personal style.

Bootcut Jeans

Jeans that go straight along the legs with a slight flare out at the ankle area, designed to accommodate boots. If you love booties as much as we do, you’ll need a few of the bootcut pairs.

We recommend these classics by Not Your Daughter’s Jeans and Lucky Brand:

Flared Jeans

Jeans that start flaring from the knee down and become wider all the way to your ankles. Mostly remembered from the 70s, the flared jeans keep coming back and for a a good reason: they look good on all body types. Good thing fall season is upon us, as there’s no better fit for a snugly sweater than a flared denim. Take a look at these two different styles from 7 for All Mankind (casual raw hem) and Not Your Daugther’s Jeans (dark classic trousers):

Skinny Jeans

Contrary to what the name suggests, skinny jeans are not for skinny women only. The skinny fit runs tight all the way down to the ankles, and especially hugs tight the calves. Although it does accentuates your hips, this cut also makes the legs look longer, which is why we say it’s not for the skinny ones alone. Skinny jeans look great with boots, so try these styles towards the upcoming boot season. Here are a couple of favorites from Blank NYC and AG Adriano Goldschmied:

Straight Leg Jeans

As straightforward as it sounds, the straight leg jeans run straight down the legs. This fit works well for curvy women, as it hugs you nicely around the hips and elongates your figure. Not Your Daughter’s Jeans Marylin style is a classic you can’t go wrong with. Also check out Jag Jeans’ Malia pull on for a straight leg & slim figure.

Boyfriend Jeans

Well…it means what you think it means. Boyfriend jeans cut are looser around the legs, but tighter at the back area. If you have thicker thighs, these would be a good choice, as they look relaxed but not saggy and give an overall cool look. Much like the ultimate boyfriend. Kut from the Kloth and Mavi offer these beauties, among others:
